In Reed Massengill's book, The Male Ideal: Lon of New York and the Masculine Physique, Lon says he not only mentored Giardina when the model pursued a career as a physique photographer, but remained close friends with Giardina and his family, who lived with Lon in his apartment in New York for some time.

More than half a century later, it is difficult to believe Bob Mizer endured court case after court case and even spent time in prison as he fought for the right to photograph adult men like this.
