Kovert of Hollywood was photographing male nudes almost as early as Bob Mizer of the Athletic Model Guild.
While most early physique photographers required their models to be meticulously groomed and posed them in classical settings, Kovert dispensed with the Roman columns, chest plates, bows and arrows, etc. to photograph his male nudes with their body hair unshaven and in settings that were plain or verging on the unusually theatrical.
Eugene Meyer is one of my favorite beefcake models.
