Bill Hillgardner not only won the title Mr. America in 1938, the first year it was offered in competitive bodybuilding, but was also pursued for some time by Hollywood for his movie-star good looks and ease in front of the camera.Later in life, he had a successful modeling career, served in the Navy during World War II, taught swimming, and eventually retired in South Florida.
