Johnny Murphy, Arnold Klein, Ben Sorenson, Duke Cannon, Forrester Millard, Gene Eberle, Milton Lippman, Glenn Masters, Lewis Craig, Jack Harris, Don Aston, Jack Porter, Eugene Meyer and John Winship Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

I must thank a generous fan of this blog for this catalog of images taken by the Athletic Model Guild.

As you can read near the bottom, Bob Mizer writes that additional photographs of some models wouldn't be available until the summer of 1949.

Without this catalog, I wonder if I'd ever discover Jack Porter is the handsome blond in the accompanying image.

Dale Curry Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

The Athletic Model Guild took this photograph of Dale Curry.

When I find a moment, I'll correctly identify on the blog AMG as the photographer of other images of Dale posing with this furniture.

Larry Funn Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

What a delight it was to obtain this photograph of Larry Funn taken by the Athletic Model Guild.

As you might know, Dennis Bell, the currently owner of AMG and founder of the Bob Mizer Foundation, collaborated with designer Anzevino on a clothing line. This image appears on one of the tee shirts.

You can read more about the collaboration in this post on my Mike The Content Producer blog.

Wally Schillicutt Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

Iconic imagery of cowboys' daily lives on a ranch doesn't get much better than this great photograph of Wally Schillicutt taken by the Athletic Model Guild.

I think this model is quite handsome and am happy to have finally acquired a photograph of him not scowling.

Here's another great photograph of Henry Lenz taken by the Athletic Model Guild.

Please jump to this post on the blog to see more images of this handsome model, most spectacularly one of him battling Ed Fury.

Bud Counts Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

The Athletic Model Guild took these photographs of Bud Counts, who was one of the most popular physique models in the 1950's.

Clearly, he was game for almost any artistic whim, some less successful than others, as you can see in this post on the blog.

John Miller Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

The Athletic Model Guild took these great images of John Miller sometime in the 1940's.

Don Ferrera Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

I was happy to acquire this photograph of Don Ferrera taken by the Athletic Model Guild. It not only show how muscular this man is, but it makes me almost certain that the image in this post on the blog was also taken by the Athletic Model Guild.

Jimmy Cavenaugh Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

The Athletic Model Guild took this nice photograph of Jimmy Cavenaugh, who looks like he's taking seriously his role in the nautical theme of the image.

The Key to the Athletic Model Guild's Symbols

The Athletic Model Guild's founder, Bob Mizer was prosecuted and sent to prison for distributing Physique Pictorial magazine and photographs of adult male models through the United States Postal Service.

One of the contributing factors was his writing symbols on the photographs of the models, prosecutors alleging he was running a prostitution ring, the symbols a menu of sexual acts and their costs per model.

Here is the key to Mizer's symbols, which was intended to steer painters, sculptures and other photographers toward the models best suited for physique posing.

Henry Lenz and Ed Fury Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

The Athletic Model Guild took these great images of Henry Lenz. I especially like the photograph of him battling Ed Fury: they look like characters straight out of a sword-and-sandal film, a genre of B movies hugely popular in 1950's America.

Kip Leonard Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

The Athletic Model Guild captured Kip Leonard's fantastic physique in these photographs.

His back and abdomen are works of art.

Bob Jensen Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

In Volume 16, Number 1 of Physique Pictorial, Bob Mizer writes about Bob Jensen, who was eighteen years old at the time Mizer took his photograph:

"His is a build developed from natural sports rather than from formal training. Though a cooperative model, he was quite indifferent to physique display, and it was only through the efforts of his attractive mother (since passed away) that he was persuaded to pose for these photographs."

Jerry Rocco Photographed by Lon

In Strength and Health and other physique magazines in the 1940's, ads routinely featured photographs like these of Jerry Rocco taken by Lon, a posing pouch inked onto the model's body.

In the latter part of that decade, the United States Postal Inspection Service ordered the owners of Strength and Health and other physique magazines to stop carrying these sort of ads if they wished to continue to send their magazines through the United States Postal Service.

When Bob Mizer found he could no longer advertise to painters, sculptures and other photographers his images of male nudes as male figure studies, he created Physique Pictorial magazine to do the advertising.

Don Fuller and Joe Leitel Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

Since I added this post to the blog, I have acquired several images from the series the Athletic Model Guild took of Don Fuller, Joe Leitel and Steve Wengryn playing cowboys and Indians.

Here, cowboy Joe Leitel attemps to subdue Indian chief Don Fuller, who's about to connect his fist to Joe's chin.

Johnny Glynn Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

The Athletic Model Guild took these very different images of Johnny Glynn.

Though his massive arms and shoulders look fantastic in both photographs, I particularly like the image of him grinning over his shoulder at the camera.

Jack Harris Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

The Athletic Model Guild took this fantastic photograph of Jack Harris.

When you jump to this post on the blog, you will see more images of this model taken by AMG, but I don't think there exists another photograph as magnificent as this one of this handsome man.
