Despite repeated run-ins with the law, Alonzo Hanagan was one of the most talented, prolific and financially successful physique photographers from the 1940's to 1960's.

A resident of New York City, he usually signed his work "Lon of New York."

While in London, England, he went by the name, Domenique.

It is Domenique who took this nice photograph of Clive Poster.

Reg Lewis


Massive Reg Lewis won the titles Mr. Olympics in 1956, Mr. Universe in 1957, Mr. America in 1963 and Mr. America Over Forty in 1983.

Like Mickey Hargitay and Richard Dubois, he was a regular member of Mae West's burlesque review in the mid-1950's.

Frank Stojack


Frank Stojack played football for the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National Football League and was a popular wrestler in the 1940's and '50's.

He was 75 years old when he died on August 30, 1987.

As you know from reading this blog, physique photography finds its roots in images of circus and freak-show performers and strongmen, who posed for cameras across North America, Australia and Europe in the 1860's to the early twentieth century.

In 1898, Garnew took this photograph of handsome Mario Helne in Boston, Massachusetts.

Mario was likely a popular athlete or performer of some kind.
