I think he has a spectacular physique.

Note the tropical motif of the room: Hawaii became the fiftieth state of the United States in 1959, sparking a countrywide obsession with all things Hawaiian and Polynesian, tiki bars and restaurants spreading across the country as fast as consumers could transform their dens and basements into tropical oases.

Bob Jensen Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

In Volume 16, Number 1 of Physique Pictorial, Bob Mizer writes about Bob Jensen, who was eighteen years old at the time Mizer took his photograph:

"His is a build developed from natural sports rather than from formal training. Though a cooperative model, he was quite indifferent to physique display, and it was only through the efforts of his attractive mother (since passed away) that he was persuaded to pose for these photographs."

Andrew Kozak

I was happy to acquire these studio images of Andrew Kozak. They contrast nicely with the photographs Denny Denfield took of him, as seen in this post on the blog.

Jerry Rocco Photographed by Lon

In Strength and Health and other physique magazines in the 1940's, ads routinely featured photographs like these of Jerry Rocco taken by Lon, a posing pouch inked onto the model's body.

In the latter part of that decade, the United States Postal Inspection Service ordered the owners of Strength and Health and other physique magazines to stop carrying these sort of ads if they wished to continue to send their magazines through the United States Postal Service.

When Bob Mizer found he could no longer advertise to painters, sculptures and other photographers his images of male nudes as male figure studies, he created Physique Pictorial magazine to do the advertising.

George O'Brien

It's no accident George O'Brien looks like a matinee idol.

He was a movie star, who initially wanted to be a camera man when he arrived in Hollywood in its early Golden Years.

He appeared as an extra and served as a stunt double in several silent films before becoming a star. He was the male lead in Sunrise, which won three Academy Awards in 1927. He was a favorite of John Ford and was featured in several of the director's films in the 1930's. George had rugged, good looks as he grew older and was hugely popular in Western films, his fans thrilled to see him astride his trusty horse Mike in picture after picture.

His personal life not to be outdone by the characters he portrayed on the silver screen, George fought in both World War I and II before retiring as a captain from the United States Naval Reserve in 1962.

He died in 1985.

In Hollywood, California, you will find his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard.

Don Fuller and Joe Leitel Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

Since I added this post to the blog, I have acquired several images from the series the Athletic Model Guild took of Don Fuller, Joe Leitel and Steve Wengryn playing cowboys and Indians.

Here, cowboy Joe Leitel attemps to subdue Indian chief Don Fuller, who's about to connect his fist to Joe's chin.

Unknown Models

It is no stretch of the imagination that these powerful-looking men were in the armed forces or athletes of some sort.

Though I've seen this image more than a few times on the web, no one seems to know anything about who they were.

Mike Norlan as John Cromer

UPDATED February 5, 2011: I'd not been able to find any information on this handsome model and wasn't even certain his name was John Cromer.

A reader of this blog pointed out what seems obvious now: John Cromer is Mike Norlan. When you jump to this post on the blog to see photographs of Mike, you will likely agree.

John Tristram

I don't think John Tristram ever took a bad photograph.

I like the deep shadows playing over his body in this image by an unknown photographer, as they not only highlight how thickly muscular he was but bring out the features in his handsome profile.

Les Workman and Ray Royal Photographed by the Western Photography Guild

The Western Photography Guild took these great images of Les Workman and Ray Royal, who has the advantage over Les in one of the photographs.

When you jump to this recent post featuring Ray McGuire and read its comments section, you can wade into the debate on whether Les Workman and Ray McGuire are in fact the same man photographed years apart.

I believe Les Workman is not only younger, but has a different, rounder face and thicker eyebrows.

Gene Shuey and Tommy Winn Photographed by Bruce of Los Angeles

Bruce of Los Angeles took this outstanding image of Gene Shuey and Tommy Winn.

John Winship and Rocky McCorkle

UPDATED November 30, 2013: Both the photograph of John Winship smiling up at the camera and the one of him with his hands on his hips were taken by Bob Mizer at the Athletic Model Guild.

I especially like the image of Winship holding the sword in front of himself.

Today, while reading the August, 1953 issue of the Athletic Model Guild's Physique Pictorial magazine, I discovered on page 6 another photograph in the series of Winship battling Rocky McCorkle, whom Mizer identifies by name in the caption.

I suspect all of the desert images in this post were taken by Mizer, though I have seen in recently published books these photographs associated with San Francisco-based photographer, Denny Denfield.

He has a nice physique and admirably hairy body.

Though I prefer images of Bob Delmonteque at the beach, I can't deny this one is spectacular.

Little is known about Simon Kornblum other than he placed in the Mr. East Coast Competition in 1946.

I think he has a spectacular abdomen, and am searching for more images of this handsome model.

Dale Gilbert and Ray McGuire Photographed by the Western Photography Guild

The Western Photography Guild took these images of Ray McGuire and Dale Gilbert.

I like the one of Ray solo as the viewer can clearly see what a great physique he has.

However, the image of him holding up a reclining Dale is arresting for its otherworldly composition. At first glance, you cannot determine whose arms belong to whom; and the fact that both models are flexing their muscular bodies into almost ballet movements at a vertiginous angle to the hillside does little to appease your unease at viewing the image.
