Stan Stanczyk took up weightlifting to be a better fighter in high school.
After being discharged from the U. S. Army, he won his first weightlifting championship in 1946 in Paris and successfully defended his title over the next five years.
At the 1948 Olympics held in London, he won a gold medal in weightlifting.
While he competed, he put on exhibitions for his sponsor, York Barbell Co., of York, Pennsylvania, thus appearing on several covers of their magazine, Strength & Health, and saved up enough money to become the co-owner of a gym.
In time, he sold that gym and opened a 32-lane bowling alley-restaurant-lounge in Miami, Florida, which he and his wife, Dorothy, operated for 27 years.
I'm not sure when he passed away.
