Juwa LaVonce, Howard Heidtmann and Don Hawksley Photographed by the Athletic Model Guild

In August, 1961, the Volume 11, Number 1 issue of Bob Mizer's magazine, Physique Pictorial, first featured dark-haired Juwa LaVonce posing with Howard Heidtmann and Don Hawksley.

Blond Howard is rapidly eclipsing Don Fuller as my favorite vintage beefcake model.

  1. Love the guys, but am I the only one that thinks the bottom photo is (unintentionally?) funny?

  2. Hello, plinkle42! I think even in 1961 it was evident the Sexual Revolution was coming to the men and women in the USA - perhaps, especially, to those living in LA, San Francisco and NYC. These men certainly knew what they were up to when they posed for Bob Mizer....As you might have already read on this blog, Joe Leitel was happily heterosexual and enjoyed posing nude in the 1950's, fully aware of the reaction he was eliciting from his gay male photographers and the gay male consumers of his images. 3. Yes, I love knowing that the models were happy to pose, fully aware of the reactions they were causing (it certainly had to be gratifying!) I merely thought the actual arrangement of the photo itself seemed an odd one. Not that I don't enjoy it! I love the blog, by the way.
