These photos were taken by John Barrington in the late 1950's or early 1960's. There is a book out on Barrington's life and career as a physique photographer, though I don't yet have it.
I'll add to the blog more images from this series in due course.
I don't know whether the book you are talking about is "Physique - The Life of John S Barrington" by Rupert Smith, which has been available here (UK) for some time. It's a good picture of Barrington's life and work and the physique photography scene of the time.
Page 119 has 6 photos of Vic and Roy,arriving at the shoot and stripping off (Vic's genitals inked out in one.) I'm guessing the one on your site was taken later.
So nice to see you back! I hope this means you've settled into your new home - I still have nightmares thanks to those photographs of your pet spiders. :)
Yes, the rest of the series is very much like this and, in fact, verges on gay pornography as we know it today, which is remarkable since these photographs were taken in the late 1950's or early 1960's, before images of adult nudity were legal here and in Great Britain.
Barrington, as you likely know, was the most prolific and persecuted English physique photographer of his era.
Brilliant! I had no idea Roy Scammell had posed nude. I only ever knew him as a stunt man on shows such as Doctor Who in the 1970s. On the new DVD release "Doctor Who: The Ambassadors of Death" there's very brief footage of Roy in a shower with other stunt men. I never dreamed I get to see a front view! Thank you!! Roy is interviewed on the DVD as well...still gorgeous!
How old are thses photos?
ReplyDeleteVic Haywood is a very sexy guy (from the 50's?). more photos and more info about him please!
